The Bethelview File

The 2007 homepage answers the question a hospital site must answer first, in the site's own capital letters: WE ARE LOCATED OFF OF GA-400 AT EXIT 13, WEST ON BETHELVIEW ROAD ABOUT 1/2 MILE ON THE LEFT, IN STEEPLECHASE PLAZA. A club book for bulldog people maps the same geography on the fancier side: where the animals and their keepers actually gathered.

What the dossier keeps

The directions are written for a driver, not a postcode. Exit 13 off the highway, west on Bethelview, half a mile, on the left, in the plaza. Cumming, Georgia is the kind of Atlanta-edge suburb where directions like that are the honest kind, and the practice kept them on the homepage for years. The hours beside them are equally plain: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday eight to six, Wednesday and Saturday eight to noon, Sunday closed. The behaviour centre kept separate evening and weekend hours on its own line. The file keeps both schedules because the record kept both: the building ran two clocks.

The tour behind the door

Both site eras kept a tour page: virtual hospital tour in the old custom content set, a tour page under about in the WordPress build. A hospital that photographs its corridors for the website is selling trust through transparency, showing the surgery, the kennel and the exam rooms before the client has to trust them. The captures kept the page's seat; the photographs themselves survive only in fragments.

Urgent care at the edge of the hours

The WordPress menu added an urgent care entry, filed in the record as urgent-care-2, the numeral again marking a second version of a page. A practice with Wednesday and Saturday half-days and Sundays closed needed a page that answered what happens in between; the file keeps the entry as the record of that promise, whatever hours it described.

The address on paper

The record pins the building more precisely than the driving directions: the practice's public listings give 5610 Bethelview Road, Suite 900, Cumming, Georgia 30040, the unit inside the plaza that carried the hospital's name. And the site kept a second door of its own: its pages pointed clients at steeplechasevet.com, the shorter companion domain the practice maintained beside this one. The file notes the alias because the record kept it, two names over one lease.

Two lines in the same plaza

The record's geography has a second layer worth keeping: the behaviour centre's phone number and the hospital's phone number were different, but the address was one. The plaza storefront that held the exam rooms also held the evening class ring, the same door serving two schedules. For the file, that is the honest map of the practice: one lease, two front desks.

The plaza context matters to how the record reads. A veterinary hospital in a retail plaza along a Georgia highway corridor is storefront medicine by design, the practice placed where clients already park. The directions the homepage printed in capital letters, exit, west, half a mile, on the left, are written for someone driving past on the way to somewhere else, which is exactly who a plaza practice is for.

How the file reads it

Strip the site to its directions and hours and the practice is still legible: one storefront in Steeplechase Plaza on Bethelview Road, open most days until six, closed Sundays, with a second line ringing after dark for the behaviour centre. The record kept the map before it kept anything else, and the file files it first for the same reason.

The file closes the address where the record leaves it: half a mile west of Exit 13, in a plaza that gave the practice its name. The building's later tenants are outside the archive's reach; the directions, the hours and the tour page are not, and the sheet keeps them as filed.
